It is referred to as a fishing weekend by most states; however, understand that it is not always a complete weekend. In some cases, single days are offered periodically throughout the year, where you are not required to carry a valid fishing license. 

Without question, you’ll want to make sure you’re fishing on a free day in your state, or else you will be subject to fines. 

Why Is It Worth Taking Advantage Of Free Fishing Days

I personally purchase a fishing license on an annual basis because I fish consistently throughout the year. 

However, for some who are not avid anglers, it is not worth the expense of buying an annual license short-term license. 

With that said, if you’re new to fishing or only want to fish a couple of days of the year, it’s a good idea to utilize free fishing days. 

If you’re new to fishing, free fishing days are an excellent way to determine if it is a sport that you would like to pursue. If so, you can always purchase a license after determining fishing is something that you enjoy.

It is important to understand that you’re required to follow fishing limits and regulations set in place by the state. 

Despite not needing a license, you can’t throw every fish you catch in the bucket. This is the case if it is either too big, too small, out of season, or protected from harvest.

It is essential to know that regulations are in place for a reason. In order to have a proper balance of fish, harvesting restrictions are put in place. Often, first time anglers are unaware of wildlife conservation laws. 

I was once on a headboat charter, where a gentleman next to me was throwing all of the fish in the cooler. Fortunately, one of the mates took notice and informed him of the size limit. However, some illegal fish unfortunately die before they can be released. 

Look For Local Free Fishing Weekend Events

As a first time angler, it is likely that you will not own any gear. Fishing equipment is costly, so stocking up if you’re unsure about the sport isn’t a wise decision. 

However, cities and towns often host fishing events during free fishing weekends. The events will typically have a limited amount of gear that can be borrowed for the day. It is well worth utilizing free equipment instead of buying until you’re sure you want to go fishing regularly. 

In addition to gear, the organization supplying the gear often will provide basic instruction. Guidance as a new angler is helpful rather than guessing wildly at everything associated with fishing. This includes baiting hooks, casting, reeling, fighting fish, landing fish, and releasing them properly. 

With that said, you’re more likely to have a successful day of fishing on a free fishing day when a clinic is available. Often, experienced anglers are on hand to walk you through the process. Allow them to help you as much as possible. This will give you a higher chance of seizing the opportunity to catch fish.

On a free fishing day, remember to invite your friends and family. Make it an event for all to enjoy when you have the chance to fish for free. 

You are likely to get a few people interested in taking up the sport, and they may ultimately become your fishing buddies long term.
