As a former yacht crew member myself, I can tell you that securing these types of vessels in a hurricane requires a lot of thought and preparation. Importantly, yacht crews prepare for storms well in advance. Scrambling at the last minute is not an option. Furthermore, most insurance companies require yachts to be secured in specific locations in order to be covered. Preparing yacht for hurricane is no easy task. Here is how crews secure yachts when a hurricane is approaching.

Can Yachts Ride Out Hurricanes

While some of the largest yachts in the world are capable of riding out a low-grade hurricane, it is never a good idea.

In most cases, yacht owners are required to secure a vessel in order to be covered under the insurance policy.

In the event the crew makes the decision to stay onboard an anchored vessel during a storm is putting there lives at risk. The vessel is more likely to sink or be severely damaged when a hurricane approaches.

Why Do Yacht Crews Plan In Advance For Hurricane Preparation

Without question, yacht captains and crews keep a close on the weather during hurricane season. As a former crew member myself, I made many trips back from the Bahamas when the track of a storm was predicted in the vicinity.

Remember, yachts do not move as fast as small vessel. With that said, you can’t outrun the storm in most cases. Furthermore, the vessel must be secured prior to the storm arriving. Remember, the responsibility of the crew goes beyond placing fenders and lines. The vessel itself must be prepared for the strong winds and storm surge.

Where Are Yachts Secured During A Hurricane

One of the most common places that yachts are secured during hurricanes are at ship yards. Ship yards are typically inshore and have the dockage space for the largest of vessels.

I have had the opportunity to visit a multitude of shipyards on the east coast of Florida. Keep in mind that shipyards are industrial, they do not compare to luxurious high end marinas.

However, one of the places that most insurance companies consider safe during a hurricane is at a shipyard.

How Is A Yacht Prepared For A Hurricane

Importantly, a yacht is never simply tied to the dock with the standard number of lines and fenders in place. Furthermore, a great deal more preparation goes into bringing the vessel dockside. Here is how a yacht is prepared for a hurricane.

Dock Lines And Fenders

Without question, yacht crews do not follow standard protocols for securing the boat during a hurricane. In The event of an approaching storm, the space between the hull and the dock or neighboring vessel is lined with fenders.

Furthermore, dock lines are doubled. When I say doubled, two lines are placed on top of each other at all points whether it be stern lines, bow lines, spring lines, and more.

Sun Shades And Deck Furniture Is Stowed

Yes, deck furniture and sunshades will become projectiles during a hurricane if they are not stowed.

With that said, the crew is busy pulling the furniture and moving it either inside the boat or to a secure building.

Additionally, sunshades and other fabric materials are pulled down, folded, and stowed until the storm has passed.

Deck Hatches Are Locked Shut And Taped

Without question, yachts are constructed with hatches scattered about the vessel. Unfortunately, a hatch that is not properly locked shut is prone to opening and potentially coming free, hitting the side of the boat or going through glass.

In addition to ensuring the hatches are locked shut, they must be sealed closed with preservaton tape. The purpose of the preservation tape is to keep not only the hatches closed but prevent water from pouring within.

The tape covers the seams of all hatches on the vessel. Remember, the driving rain can easily penetrate hatches. Additionally, standing water, will seep between the seals causing water to reach areas that it is not intended.

With that said, I recommend keeping multiple rolls of preservation tape on hand for hurricane preparation.

Now You Know How Yachts Are Prepared For Hurricanes

Preparing yacht for hurricane is easy once you understand the process. However, keep in mind that it requires a substantial amount of time in addition to preperation. Staying ahead of the storm is critical as it is important for safety. Preperation in advance will allow crew members to arrive back home safely to ride out the storm after the yacht is prepared for the onslought.Â
