One of the best times of day to go for a boat ride is during sunset. The colors of the sun reflecting on the water as it falls beneath the horizon is a sight to see by boat. As a captain, I spent many evenings on vessels as the day transitioned into night. With that said, here are 5 sunset boating ideas for the next time you get the chance to get out on the water.

Make It A Happy Hour

What is better than hosting a cocktail party aboard a vessel while sunset boating? However, remember to have a designated driver aboard the boat.

Bring along beer, wine, liquor, and all of the mixes that everyone enjoys. Importantly, you’re going to want not only enough ice to keep the drinks cold but extra ice for mixed drinks.

I recommend setting up a bar area adjacent to comfortable seating. Keep in mind that you don’t want to be racing. Instead, venture slowly through the water so nobody falls down with a drink in hand.

Lastly, make sure nobody overindulges. The last thing you want is for somebody to go overboard, especially as daylight begins to fade.

Stay Out For The Night Time Lights

Boating at night offers a unique perspective because as the sun sets, the shoreline lights up between homes, businesses, and buildings.

I recommend making a combination of a sunset and nighttime adventure. Take advantage of the chance to see the sun fall beneath the horizon before night sets in. With that said, you’re going to want to make sure you’re away from the dock at least an hour before the sun falls.

Importantly, once the sun does set, remember to turn on your navigation lights. Lastly, be cautious when returning to the marina. Utilize channel markers while being on the lookout for other vessels.

Anchor Out For A Late Day Swim

Take the opportunity to go for a swim by boat during the sunset. Rather than the blazing sun of the day, enjoy the less powerful rays as the day shifts to night. Secure a dock line off the cleat of the stern and hold. This way, you don’t need to make as much effort to stay in place.

It should be mentioned that the water during the evening is often warmer than the temperature of the air. With that said, it will feel welcome to jump in compared to making a dreaded plunge into cool waters.

Conversely, keep a towel nearby because the air will feel cool when you get back aboard the boat. Dry off and put on an extra layer during sunset so that you can remain comfortable during the sunset boating adventure.

I enjoy being in the water and watching the sun fall beneath the horizon. However, I do recommend getting back aboard the boat once darkness has set in for safety.

Bring Along The Grill And Have A Cookout

One of my favorite things to do on a boat is grill. Fortunately, there are boat-friendly grills that are designed to be mounted in fishing rod holders or railings.

Rather than eating at home before getting on the water, pack the grill and food to enjoy the sunset on the boat. Keep in mind that you’re going to need to pack barbecue tools.

Importantly, you don’t have to go fancy; hot dogs and burgers will do the trick. However, if you want, upgrade to steaks or seafood. As a side, consider the many options of boat snacks.

Cast A Line

During the early evening, as the sun begins to set, the fish tend to feed near the surface of the water. With that said, it is never a bad idea to consider fishing during sunset.

I have fished during sunset on a multitude of occasions and most often found success with top water baits. However, bottom fishing should not be ruled out.

Remember, if you’re anchoring, turn on the anchor lights so you don’t forget once the sun has fully set. Furthermore, if you’re trolling, illuminate the running lights so you can be spotted as the day turns to night.

Consider These 5 Sunset Boating Ideas

No matter if you’re just getting off of work or enjoying your weekend, one of the best times to boat is as the sun is setting. If you’re looking for ideas, consider any of the above-mentioned. Remember to turn on your navigation lights as the sky begins to darken. Lastly, bring along your friends or family for the adventure at dusk.Â
