Without a doubt, you have plenty of options when it comes to activities associated with boating. First, it is important to understand what exactly a day boat is. A day boat is a vessel that does not have sleeping accommodations. With that said, you can find plenty of things to do on a boat during the day. Here are 8 boat trip ideas for families.

Visit A Waterfront Restaurant

Without a doubt, my favorite day boat trip is to visit a waterfront restaurant. The combination of cruising on the water and dining dockside is hard to pass up.

Most lakes, rivers, and coastal waterways will have waterfront dining with dockage. The ambiance is hard to beat. Remember, if you have a few options, try them all to determine the best.

Head To The Beach

Going to the beach by boat is ideal because you can escape to islands that are not accessible by car.

Drop an anchor off the bow and back the stern close to the shore. I recommend tossing a second anchor off of the back so that you can hold your position. Holding tight to the beaches allows you, your family, and your friends to wade into the beach, which is better than swimming. You’ll want to avoid swimming in beach chairs and other accessories.

My family and I head to the beach on a day boat trip on a regular basis through the summer and fall.

Hike A Secluded Island

Similar to visiting remote beaches, explore islands that are lined with hiking trails. I have a number of barrier islands nearby that I enjoy walking after arriving by boat.

When hiking on islands, you’ll encounter fewer people if they are only accessible by boat. Along the trails, you’re likely to see an abundance of wildlife. I recommend bringing a bathing suit because chances are, the trails will lead you to other sections of the beach.

Lastly, remember to pack bug spray if you are making a day boat trip to an island. The bugs can be abundant in some situations.

Take A Sunset Cruise

Watching the sunset from a boat offers an unobstructed view. One of the most enjoyable times to be on the water is while the sun is setting.

Remember, if you stay out on the water as the day turns to night, you’ll get a different perspective when the lights illuminate along the shore.

I highly recommend boating through sunset and into the evening if you live in an area with a city. The skyline, when lit up after dark, is exciting to look at while you’re cruising the water. Lastly, pack a few cocktails while you’re going for a slow ride.

Cast A Line

As an avid angler, I enjoy fishing whenever the opportunity presents itself. During a day boat trip, bring along fishing gear.

You don’t have to be an experienced angler to have a good time and catch fish. Bring along the basics, which include a rod and reel, bait, hooks, weights, and floats. Remember, you can always ask local tackle shops for advice on what to use.

Lastly, if you’re planning to fish on a day boat trip, make sure that you have a valid fishing license on hand.

Anchor Out And Relax

Considering the hustle and bustle of life, taking the opportunity to relax when it is available is worth it.

Instead of cruising endlessly or engaging in a water activity, drop the anchor and hang out. I recommend finding calm water with minimal traffic. You’ll find it much more enjoyable under these conditions.

Once the boat is secured, play some music, lay back, and relax in the sun.

Engage In Water Activities

Nothing beats participating in water sports while you’re out on the boat. You’ll have plenty of options to choose from, including tubing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, paddle boarding, swimming, and lounging on floats.

On a day off of work, you can’t pass up a day boat trip that includes water activities.

Enjoy The Scenery

One of the more relaxing experiences on a boat is taking a slow cruise and enjoying the scenery.

No matter, if you’re with friends or family, cruising lakes, coastal waterways, or rivers, offers a unique perspective from the water. Take the opportunity to take in the marshy shoreline, tree-lined bank, or city.

I recommend boating during the fall months when the leaves have begun to turn. The coloration as it reflects off the water is exceptional.

Take A Day Boat Trip

Take advantage of any or all of the day boat trips listed above. When you have the opportunity to get out on the water, take advantage of the time. Remember, the right weather won’t always align with each off day from work. Lastly, be smart while boating; staying safe is of the utmost importance.Â
