During the heavy summer rains or the cold winter air temperatures, spray curtains are essential to maximize comfort for boaters. Nothing is worse than being cold or soaked while boating, especially when it can be avoided. Curtains are typically not standard equipment; however, they can be ordered from the manufacturer or purchased as an aftermarket product. Here is what you need to know about center console spray curtains.

How Do Spray Curtains Shield Boaters

Without question, the goal with curtains is to block rain, cold temperatures, sea spray, in addition to wind, or a combination of them all.

Spray curtains enclose the helm around the console from the T-Top with clear vinyl to allow visibility on the port starboard ahead and behind the vessel.

The enclosure is connected to the vessel via snaps or straps. With that said, the curtains must be firmly secured so that they are capable of withstanding both strong winds and pressure applied when running at high speeds.

Importantly, the enclosure can act as a boat cover for the console holding marine electronics that should remain dry when the boat is stored.

Fortunately, the spray curtains are removable if you’re not expecting rain, cold, or high winds. I have taken advantage of enclosures while navigating the Caribbean. Although the weather is warm, the winds are stiff consistently. Therefore, I put them up when running from island to island to remain dry.

How To Care For Center Console Spray Curtains

In order to maintain a clear line of vision, it is essential to clean vinyl on curtains. I have seen boat owners fail to properly clean and wax the curtains, only to discover that they needed replacing.

Here is what you need to know about how to care for center console curtains.

Rinse And Wash

Rinsing and washing is the first step to keeping the enclosure free of debris. Whether you run the boat in saltwater or freshwater, rinsing is critical.

With that being said, In saltwater, dried salt will accumulate if you fail to wash it away after each use. A slippery coating will form and reduce the distance of visibility. Always spray the inside and outside of curtains after use in saltwater.

Comparatively, the same applies to freshwater. Airborne dust and dirt will create a layer on the inside and outside of the curtains. To maintain a clear line of sight, rinse and wash the enclosure.

Waxing Clear Vinyl

As a former captain and boat owner, I have had to care for and replace clear vinyl on boats. However, the life of the enclosure is, without question, extended if it is waxed consistently.

The biggest challenge with waxing clear vinyl is when it is out of reach when standing on the deck of a vessel.

In many occasions, you’ll need a ladder because it is best to apply the wax while the enclosure is in place rather than removed. If the curtains are taken down, they are prone to scratching when waxing or transporting.

I highly recommend applying Collinite Leather and Vinyl Wax. Without a doubt, I have tested the wax extensively and can confirm it works well in preserving clear vinyl and in maintaining visibility.

To apply, add the wax to a soft rag and evenly wipe across all of the clear vinyl. Once it is dried, use a soft rag and buff until all the wax has been removed. Dried wax will appear chalky on the surface.

Dry Spray Curtains

No matter if you’re removing, rolling up, or leaving the curtains in place, it is critical to dry them with a clean and dry chamois mop.

Again, the goal is to prevent scratching. For this reason, don’t use a chamois cloth that has touched the ground.

First, similar to the surface of a boat, watermarks are likely if you don’t remove free-standing water. Watermarks are challenging to remove because they require buffing, which is an added step compared to simply drying after every wash.

Secondly, if you roll up the curtains wet, you’re at risk of mold and mildew growth. It is important to wipe the panels dry before allowing them to air dry before rolling up.

Do Not Stow The Curtains Folded Or Rolled For Long Periods

Unfortunately, boaters leave spray curtains rolled up or folded for extended periods. Leaving the curtains rolled or folded will develop muscle memory. Muscle memory causes the curtains to fail to relax and open as they would naturally.

I have had curtains take a couple of days to hang naturally after they have been rolled up for a couple of weeks.

With that being said, it is essential to either hang the enclosure back on the T-top or unroll the curtains if they have not been used for two or more weeks.

Center Console Spray Curtains Area Easy To Care For

Rather than allow your valuable investment to deteriorate due to poor maintenance procedures, take proper care of them. Maintaining center console enclosures is easy, and you’ll want it when the weather turns poor. You won’t need much regarding supplies, and they will come at a low cost.
