As you’re walking the docks at marinas or out boating, it is common to see boats fitted with swim platforms. The platform serves multiple purposes and is composed of different materials. Additionally, they come in many different sizes, allowing for one or more people to be on the platform at one time. Here is what you need to know about a boat swim platform.

What Is A Swim Platform

A swim platform is a flat surface that extends from the back of the transom. They are composed of different materials depending on the type and style of the vessel. Importantly, not all boats are equipped with a swim platform.

Size

Without question, the size of a swim platform varies. On cruisers, the platform often extends from port to starboard size. However, on center consoles, or runabouts, the platform can be a small two foot by two foot square piece of fiberglass.

What Is The Purpose Of A Boat Swim Platform

As the name implies, a swim platform is intended to allow people aboard the vessel easy access in and out of the water.

In addition to swimming, the platform provides easy boarding access to water toys. The water toys include jet skis, tubes, wakeboards, and more. Also, divers can stage gear on the platform and get set up and ready to go in a location closest to the water.

Why A Swim Platform Is Beneficial For Lounging

One of the biggest benefits of a large-sized platform is the added space to lounge. Remember, on the bow, you won’t have access to the water compared to the stern.

If you’re looking for a spot in the sun to kick back with a cocktail, take advantage of the swim platform. Here, you will be able to lay out or sit on the ground with your feet dangling in the water.

Furthermore, you‘ll be able to hop in and out of the water when you need to cool off. As an avid boater, this is one of my favorite places to hang out after I have set the anchor.

Lastly, remember to move off the swim platform when you’re ready to get underway. You won’t have anything around you for support while moving.

Down Sides Of A Swim Platform

Although platforms have a significant number of benefits, they also have downsides. Here is a breakdown of the challenges boaters face when a boat is fitted with a swim platform.

Swim Platforms Become A Bird Haven

One of the biggest downfalls to a swim platform is that it becomes a place of rest for waterbirds.

It is not uncommon to see birds lined up on swim platforms, especially in marinas. With that said, they are prone to making a mess. You can expect to clean the boat on a minimum of a weekly basis. However, a bird deterrent can be highly beneficial in keeping the birds off of the platform.

Boat Swim Platforms Are Challenging To See When Operating

While not all swim platforms are the most aft portion of the vessel, in many cases, they are. Undoubtedly, they are hard to see when sitting or standing at the helm and backing into a slip.

Often, the operator fails to remember how far the platform extends, and it impacts the dock. As a former captain, I have seen this happen on a multitude of occasions. Unfortunately, gel coat repair is expensive. If you have a swim platform, don’t forget it is there when backing down.

How To Maintain A Boat Swim Platform

Swim platform maintenance is highly dependent on the materials of which it is composed. Generally speaking, it is essential to wash the flat surface regularly with boat soap and soft bristled brush.

In the situation where the platform is positioned above inboard engines, you’re likely to have exhaust stains around the perimeter of the platform. You’ll want to wash those clean after every trip to avoid more rigorous cleaning and waxing.

Lastly, most swim platforms have stainless steel. The stainless steel makes up grab rails or cleats. Wash the stainless steel weekly in addition to after each use. I recommend applying metal wax every six months to help prevent corrosion.

Utilize Your Boat Swim Platform

Without a doubt, a swim platform can be considered an extension of the boat. However, never sit on the flat surface while the boat is in motion. Sitting or standing on the platform puts you at risk of going overboard. While the vessel is at anchor, take the opportunity to get in the water or climb aboard water toys. Lastly, take proper care of the space so that it remains in top condition.
