A cooler is one of the most widely used pieces of gear when spending time on the water boating or fishing. A cooler, without a doubt, serves many purposes, including keeping food and drinks cool and fish when it comes to anglers specifically. I have used the RTIC 20 QT Hard cooler multiple times when hanging in the backyard or heading out on the water. Here is what you need to know about the RTIC 20 cooler.

How Big is The RTIC Cooler, 20 QT

I am an avid angler and boater and utilize coolers whenever I head out on the water. The space inside of the cooler is, without a doubt, important.

The 20 quart RTIC cooler is significantly larger on the outside when compared to the inside. The insulating shell takes up a significant amount of space. However, it should be noted that without the insulation the cooler would fail to hold ice for extended periods of time.

I’ll admit the side dimensions from the RTIC website are deceiving. The external measurements are 11 ¾” high. 11 ¾” wide at the base, and 13 ¾” wide at the top. It should be noted the internal space is significantly smaller. However, the purpose of an RTIC is to provide long lasting insulation. Therefore, the side walls are thick thus reducing the transfer of heat and melting ice at a rapid rate.

Without question, the cooler is moved with ease. The sturdy and stable stainless steel handlebar at the top locks in place. In combination with the handle bar is a non slip grip. Take hold of the cooler and move it from point A to point B with ease.

What Can You Store Inside Of The RTIC 20 Cooler

Personally, I do not prefer throwing fish in such a pretty cooler. The RTIC 20 is designed to hold up to 24 canned beers with ice. I’ll admit I have not tried this, but I believe the amount of ice applied to the top would be minimal.

I do not recommend utilizing the 20 quart RTIC for fish. The cooler is far too small to hold fish of size in combination with a multitude of fish.

It should be noted that the cooler drains with ease. No matter what you’re storing inside, the cooler has a drain plug on the left and right sides. Therefore if you’re throwing small fish on ice, the cooler can be washed and properly drained before stowing for the next adventure.

Why The RTIC 20 Cooler Remains Cold

Insulation keeps items inside of a cooler cold. The walls of the RTIC 20 is incredibly thick, thus reducing the internal storage space, as noted above.

I have read that the cooler will remain cold with ice for up to a ten day time span. Without question, I believe the RTIC holds ice for 10 days but not when the cooler is opened and closed.

It should be noted to close the lid, lock the two latches mounted to the front and slide the handle into the closed position when preserving cold temperatures. Do not allow anyone to open and close the cooler on a consistent basis.

What Colors Can I Buy The RTIC 20 Cooler

Don’t worry; you have plenty of options when buying a cooler. I was gifted the RTIC 20 for fathers day of 2023. While the cooler has not been used extensively, it remains in great condition despite being outside.

As a gift, I received the Navy blue cooler. However, it also comes in grey, white, blue, and tan. The navy is a very sharp looking color that will show less wear and tear over time from dings and drops.

No matter the color you prefer, you will find that cooler keeps the items stored inside cold.

How Much Does The RTIC 20 Cooler Weigh

As noted above, the longevity of ice is impacted by the thickness of the cooler. The RTIC 20 is built with highly insulated walls. The insulation adds weight.

I have lugged the cooler around empty, and I’ll admit it’s heavy. Add ice, food, or beer on top and its going to be even heavier. The empty weight of the RTIC 20 is nearly 18 pounds. Add ice and drinks on top, and plan to use a cart instead of carrying the cooler on the move.

Most Practical Uses For An RTIC 20 Cooler

The RTIC coolers are designed for a multitude of reasons. I would not suggest using the cooler for storing fish or bait. While yes it serves the purpose of keeping items within cold, there is no sense in stinking up a costly and pretty cooler. Instead, consider a Yeti Loadout Bucket for bait. I use one and love it for storing live bait.

From my experience using the cooler, I would only add food and drinks within. Importantly, a center divider is available to keep items on the left and right side sperate. We have found it useful when having adults and family on the boat. One side is for kids, and one side is for adults. However, the divider is not included. Instead, it can be purchased as an accessory.

Should You Buy An ARTIC 20 Cooler

I recommend the ARTIC 20 when it comes to storing drinks and food compared to fish. The cooler is perfect for spending a day on the boat, at the beach, or by the pool. Without question, ice is added with ease. A drain is fitted on the left and right sides. Simply drain out the melted water and add ice to the top. Be prepared to carry a heavy load but know that your items within are safe.
