The next time you’re looking for an escape to an island that is not accessible by car in coastal South Carolina, take a look at Daufuskie Island. It is a great destination to stay a day or for a week or longer. It feels as though you are on a secluded tropical island because it is void of the everyday life’s hustle and bustle. Here is what to do on Daufuskie Island.

Where is Daufuskie Island

The piece of land called Daufuski, which is surrounded by water on all sides, is just over nine square miles in size. The island is located on the southern end of coastal South Carolina along the Georgia border. The island to its north is Hilton Head and to the south is Tybee Island.

If you’re coming for the day and staying in Savannah, Georgia, Bluffton, South Carolina, Hilton Head, South Carolina, or Tybee Island, Georgia, make the trip to Daufuskie.

How Do You Get to Daufuskie Island

One of the great things about Daufuskie Island is that it is only accessible by boat. You must come by private boat or take a ferry to Daufuskie Island. A ferry can be boarded at the base of the Hilton Head bridge on the Bluffton side at Buckingham Landing.

Once you’re on board, it will take you to Freeport Marina Daufuskie to offload on the island. Let a Daufuskie ferry do the work for you instead of bringing along the boat.

Keep in mind, when you load the ferry, don’t leave anything behind. You won’t find a grocery store or convenience market. Also, if you’re planning to enjoy Daufuskie Island fishing, be sure to bring bait and gear.

How To Get Around the Island

Most will enjoy the fact that vehicles are almost nonexistent, which makes for a more peaceful setting. When you arrive, plan on renting either a bike or a golf cart to transport you from end to end. While you’re at Daufuskie, take in all that it offers.

What Are The Must-Sees on Daufuskie Island

The island has a few stops that should be made on your adventure. Remember to pack some ice waters in the warm summer months, especially when you’re peddling your way around. You won’t be wondering is Daufuskie Island worth it after seeing what there is to do once you arrive.

Daufuskie Island Tour

When you’re planning your ferry trip, add on a tour of the island offered by Daufuskie Island Ferry. Some of the adventures include horseback riding, kayak, and standup paddleboard adventures, wildlife excursions, history, and art, or the Gullah tour via an air-conditioned bus.

With so many options to choose from, one of the tours they offer is sure to pique your interest and provide the opportunity to learn about the island’s long history.

Daufuskie Island Rum Company

Central to the island is the Daufuskie Island Rum Company. It was established in 2013 and is a focal point of the island. The rum they produce is found throughout the states of both South Carolina and North Carolina. This is a must when it comes to Daufuskie Island things to do.

The rum company has ample seating and offers a view of a large pond under its permanently constructed open-air roof enclosure for a break from the sun’s rays. During your visit, sample any of the rums they produce, including Kona, Fuskie Fire, Gold, Spiced, Silver, Gold Reserve, or Vanilla. They even make bourbon and also blueberry and original vodka. Bring along a carrying bag to bring a bottle or two back home with you.

Olde Daufuskie Crab Company Restaurant

On your way in from the ferry because it just steps from the boarding dock or on the way out after a long day burning calories, stop in at Olde Daufuskie Crab Company for a bite to eat.

For the seafood lover, indulge in the local offerings, including shrimp tacos, soft shell crab tacos, peel and eat shrimp, oysters, deviled crab, and more. If you’re not into seafood, don’t worry. Olde Daufuskie Crab Company Restaurant has plenty of menu items that don’t come from the sea.

Although you can order Daufuskie oysters Amazon, I recommend eating them fresh locally.

Pair your meal selection with a tropical cocktail or ice-cold beer while you gaze out over the water. I have enjoyed meals at the restaurant and can attest to both the environment and the quality of the food. Don’t miss your ferry boat ride back. However, it’s a great place to end the day with it comes to things to do in Daufuskie Island because it’s positioned at the base of the ferry dock.
