Fishing derbies are fun events for children not only to catch fish in hopes of winning a prize but seeing fellow schoolmates and friends. As a kid, I fished in numerous derbies that today translated into a continued passion for fishing. Notably, a kid’s fishing derby comes with unique challenges. Here are five tips to help your kids when participating in a fishing derby.

Always Be On The Lookout

Kids fishing derbies, although fun and exciting, come with the risk of injury. Take it from me; I have seen kids get hooked by fellow anglers who were first not properly taught, second reckless with the fishing rod and reel, or lastly, unaware of the people around them.

Today, I actively participate in fishing derbies with my two children. Unfortunately, I have witnessed kids become hooked due to a fellow angler. Watching a child scream when the hook becomes embedded in their skin is undoubtedly saddening. For this reason, kids must be educated before casting a line.

Teach Children How To Use The Rod And Reel

One of the most critical steps to ensuring kids remain safe during a derby is to teach them how to properly use the rod and reel.

Improper use results in inadvertent casts, casts in the wrong direction, or simply no cast causing the hook to whip wildly.

Importantly, demonstrate correctly using the rod and reel combination before passing the gear off to the child. As a parent, if you do not know how to use a rod and reel, don’t hesitate to ask a volunteer overseeing the kid’s fishing derby. Volunteers are happy to lend a helping hand.

Be Mindful Of Those Around You

Remain vigilant at all times when participating in the children’s event. Not everyone is paying attention to you and your kids while fishing. With that being said, watch for erratic casters in your vicinity or for those who set the hook with such wild force the hook and bait become an airborne missile.

Don’t Buy Gear If You Don’t Own It

All too often, kids show up to a fishing derby with a shiny new rod and reel. Don’t get me wrong, this is great if you plan to fish with your kids on a regular bases. However, more times than not, the rod sits in the garage untouched until the following year’s kid’s fishing derby.

No need to spend money on fishing combinations that won’t be used. Undoudabtly, kids fishing derbies supply rods and reels to children. Without hesitation, ask to use equipment provided by those hosting the event.

Bait Is Provided

In comparison to rods and reels, bait is provided for kids during fishing derbies. While visiting local bait and tackle shops is easy, you do not need to purchase bait to participate in a kid’s fishing derby.

Conversely, if you, as the parent, are an avid angler and prefer a specific bait for your child, don’t hesitate to buy it before the start of the derby. I always use what is available because the host of the event often supplies three options when it comes to bait.

Catch More Fish

More often than not, ponds are well stocked for kids fishing derbies. For example, I fish with my kids in a local fishing derby annually. Not only is the pond stocked with bluegill consistently, but also, automatic feeders line the shoreline. As a result of the consistent feeding, the bluegill is massive in size.

Fortunately, it is unlikely that your child will not catch a fish due to stocking efforts. However, to improve your childs chances of catching multiple fish, create separation from other nearby anglers. A multitude of anglers in a confined space will cause the fish to become spooked and, therefore, less likely to bite.

Lastly, allow the fish to strike and eat the bait. The slightest movement of a bobber is unlikely to convert to a well hooked fish. Instead, let the fish to eat the bait and drop the bobber before instructing the child to reel.

Essentials To Bring Along On A Kids Fishing Derby

Bringing basic household items with you will make your day easier and more enjoyable. Here is a list of things to bring along during a kid’s fishing derby.

Fishing Pliers

Most kid’s fishing derbies are held on ponds stocked with panfish. Panfish are notorious for having small mouths and sharp dorsal fin spines.

I highly recommend bringing along a pair of fishing pliers. Conversely, needle nose pliers will do the trick if you don’t have fishing pliers.

Lastly, to help avoid hand injuries, pack an old rag. The rag, when wrapped around the fish, reduces the chances of being barbed by fish spines.

Sunscreen

The sun’s reflection on the shores of a pond or other body of water increases exposure to the skin. Without question, apply sunscreen before leaving the house but also pack sunblock to reapply as necessary.

Snacks And Hydrating Drinks

A combination of sun and wind quickly dehydrates our bodies. Children are unable to recognize the symptoms of dehydration; therefore, it is recognized in its later stages.

When heading to a kid’s fishing derby, pack plenty of water and make it readily available during the event. Also, bring along a few snacks in the event anyone gets hungry so you don’t have to head home early.

Attend A Kids Fishing Derby

The next time a kids fishing derby pops up in your area, register your kids for the fun event. I highly recommend considering the five tips to make your day and your kid’s day more enjoyable. I have fished in kids derbies as a child and now attend derbies with my own kids. Knowing how to prepare ahead of time will make you look as a well seasoned derby veteran.
