One of the most crucial components of an outboard engine is the fuel filter connected to a cut in the gas line. A significant number of boat owners are unaware that the filter exists and, therefore, do not realize it requires servicing. Unfortunately, both land and water-based gas stations inadvertently sell gasoline and diesel that contain water. Outboard motors do not function well when the gas is watered or contains contaminants. Understand what an inline fuel filter for outboard motor.

What Does An Outboard Fuel Filter Do

Fuel filters remove small particles and water before the fuel enters the engine. Marine engines consist of small parts that are easily clogged. Additionally, the inline boat fuel filter removes water to prevent the engine from functioning poorly and assisting in avoid internal corrosion.

Without the filter the engine would be at risk of long term but preventable damage. Not only must the filter remain in place, but it must also be changed periodically to maximize engine performance.

How Do I know If My Inline Fuel Filter Is Bad

Avoid waiting until the engine runs rough due to lack of fuel flow from a clogged filter; however, this is a sure sign it requires replacing.

Outboard motor fuel filters are clear which allows for frequent inspections. Fuel filters with debris have turned black, or water requires replacement to optimize performance. We recommend checking the filter periodically to avoid waiting too long for a replacement. Waiting until its past due puts you at risk of becoming stranded on the water.

How Full Should An Inline Fuel Filter Be

The outboard inline fuel filter must be full of fuel. An outboard fuel filter not staying full indicates a lack of flow, and the issue requires being addressed.

When a fuel filter is partially filled, this indicates a blockage in the gas line or a clogged filter that requires replacement. Never let the filter get to the point that you cannot see inside, as you will be unable to determine if it is partially filled.

How Much Does An Inline Fuel Filter Cost

For the do-it-yourselfer, the cost of purchasing a marine inline fuel filter ranges between five and twenty dollars. Visit a local boat dealership or shop online. However, when you are unsure of what to purchase, bring the model number. The shop attendant will pull the proper replacement to ensure that it is the correct fit for the motor.

While the task of replacing a fuel filter is simple, marine mechanics will charge in access of 100 dollars. The fee is a combination of marking up the cost of parts in addition to labor. Make sure to find a reputable marine mechanic who will get the job done quickly.

How Do You Change An Inline Fuel Filter

The process of changing the inline marine fuel filter is simple; however, take precautions. Whenever you are working with gasoline, the risk of fire is always present. Avoid working on the engine when it is hot and shut off the gas.

Once the gas line is closed and the engine is cool, begin replacing the filter. A filter is installed on the gas line and is secured with zip ties. Cut the zip ties on the top and bottom of the filter without damaging the fuel line itself.

Once the zip ties are cut, take note of the arrow indicating the flow direction and pull the filter free from both ends. Gasoline will likely spill; therefore, clean the spill with a rag.

Remove the new filter from the box and pay close attention to the arrow. Correctly line up the filter and place the hoses on each end. Replace the zip ties to avoid the fuel lines from coming free. Snip the excess zip tie.

Always remember to turn the fuel from off to on so it flows to the outboard motor fuel filter. Ensure that the hoses connecting to the filter are not leaking fuel inside of the engine compartment. Lastly, test to ensure that the motor is operating correctly before heading out on the water.

Does Your Outboard Need A New Inline Fuel Filter

Whether you failed to realize your engine had a filter or it began running poorly, the inline fuel filter is a critical component. Take the time to inspect the condition and add it to the list for an annual replacement to avoid trouble. Avoid becoming stranded on the water. The task of marine inline fuel filters replacement is simple task and low in cost.
